Apple coming out with 7.85’’ ‘iPad mini’?
Reports in a Taiwanese newspaper indicate that Apple may be considering downsizing its iPad 2 to compete directly with the Amazon Kindle Fire. Apple ‘iPad mini’ may hit the shelves as early as 2012
Unwired View via Dan Nystedt got wind of a report recently published in Taiwan’s Economic Daily News that LG Display and AU Optronics have sent samples of a 7.85’’ screen with a resolution of 1024 x 768p to Apple. Rumour has it that Apple may be building a 7.85’’ ‘iPad mini’ with the same resolution that the iPad 2 sports. The guesswork has sent the internet into a tizzy.
Many believe that with the new device, Apple is hoping to capture the low end tablet market that is currently dominated by Amazon with its popular Kindle Fire. Since Apple is already a best seller in the high end tablet market with its iPad 2 this move will consolidate its position as the over all market leader.
Mac Rumours spoke about the development citing Brian White, an analyst with Ticonderoga Securities. According to him, Apple may only reduce the price of its new device and keep its size the same as that of the iPad 2. This does tie in with the fact that Apple has always maintained that anything less than 9-10’’ is too small a size for a quality tablet.
Apple is also expected to release the next generation iPad, the iPad 3, in the coming months. A high end device, it will sport a resolution of 2048 x 736p on its Retina display. If the company does indeed launch the rumoured ‘iPad mini’ for a price lower than the iPad 2 but with similar features, Apple will indeed become the overall leader of the tablet world and fend off all competition for a long time to come.
