PM Manmohan Singh files Rajya Sabha nomination from Guwahati
New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections in Guwahati.
Dr Singh’s term as Member of Parliament (MP) expires in June. The PM, accompanied by Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh, will also attend the Congress Legislative Party meeting at Dispur.
In Assam, notification was issued on Tuesday to hold elections to two Rajya Sabha seats. According to official sources, May 20 is the last date to file nominations and the scrutiny of nominations will be held the next day. Polls, if necessary, will be held on May 30.
The current term of Rajya Sabha members representing Assam, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Kumar Deepak Das will expire on June 16.
Expressing serious concern over the ongoing protests in Andhra Pradesh, following the nod for the creation of a separate Telangana State, the Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja said that the Centre must address the genuine concerns of the people and assure them that their interests will be duly protected.
