Manipal in shock after gang-rape of medical student; culprits still at large
Manipal (Karnataka): The alleged gang-rape of a medical student in the global education hub of Manipal has sent shockwaves among the student community.
Three unidentified men raped the 22-year-old medical student on Thursday night. The victim was abducted from outside her college library by the men who came in an autorickshaw at 11:30 pm. The culprits are still at large despite a massive search operation by the police. A major educational centre, Manipal is 5 km from the famous Udupi temple town on the west coast of the state and about 410 km from Bangalore.
Karnataka home minister K J George visited Manipal on Sunday to take stock of the situation. He reviewed the case investigation with top police officials, including state Additional Director-General of Police (Law & Order) Bipin Gopalakrishnan and Inspector General of Police (western range) Pratap Reddy.
The minister told reporters that eight teams have been formed to nab the rapists and the police have good leads. He said security would be strengthened in Manipal and would include more CCTVs around the university town.
