Accused Mohammad Hamid says he knew the victim for about two weeks; he was reportedly in an inebriated state when incident happened

Kolkata: The 24-year-old man arrested for alleged involvement in the gang rape of a 21-year-old woman in the city was acquainted with the victim since the past few days, police said on Tuesday.

Mohammad Hamid, who was arrested on Monday, was remanded to police custody till Feb 3 by a court during the day.

"Hamid has claimed that he was familiar with the victim for the last 14 to 15 days," said Joint Commissioner (Crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh adding that the vehicle inside which the girl was raped has been seized.

"The accused said he was drunk when the incident occurred and has admitted having sexual intercourse with the victim," added Ghosh.

The victim, a mall employee, was allegedly gang-raped in a truck while she was travelling back home in Howrah from Kidderpore here on Sunday night. Injured in the assault, she is recuperating in a city nursing home.
