Moradabad: Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister Azam Khan on Monday resigned as in charge of the Kumbh Mela Organising Committee following the loss of 36 lives in a stampede at the Allahabad Railway Station on Sunday night. “Though the incident took place outside the Kumbh Mela premises at the railway station, which was not in our jurisdiction, I take moral responsibility and resign as the in-charge of the Kumbh. I am saddened with such an unfortunate incident. I am sending my resignation to the Chief Minister,” said Azam Khan.

Thirty-six people died and 39 others were injured in the stampede, which occurred on platform number five, where thousands of Kumbh devotees had gathered to board a train. It is, however, feared that the death toll may go up since the condition of some of the injured is said to be critical.
