Azam Khan resigns as in-charge of Kumbh Mela
Moradabad: Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister Azam Khan on Monday resigned as in charge of the Kumbh Mela Organising Committee following the loss of 36 lives in a stampede at the Allahabad Railway Station on Sunday night. “Though the incident took place outside the Kumbh Mela premises at the railway station, which was not in our jurisdiction, I take moral responsibility and resign as the in-charge of the Kumbh. I am saddened with such an unfortunate incident. I am sending my resignation to the Chief Minister,” said Azam Khan.
Thirty-six people died and 39 others were injured in the stampede, which occurred on platform number five, where thousands of Kumbh devotees had gathered to board a train. It is, however, feared that the death toll may go up since the condition of some of the injured is said to be critical.
Soaring temperatures and heat waves have gripped North India, as locals try to beat it by drinking fluids and covering themselves as they drive their vehicles. The effect of the rising temperatures was visible in Allahabad, where scores of people turned up to take bath in the Ganges river to beat the heat.
