Spring festival at Uttarakhand Rajbhavan
Dehra Dun, Mar 4 (PTI) "Basantotsav-2012", the annual spring festival at the Rajbhavan attracted a large number of people during the past two days.
Uttarakhand Governor Margaret Alva and Chief Minister B C Khanduri had yesterday inaugurated the festival.
During the festival, Alva also released a stamp depicting "Fyuli", a yellow colour flower that blooms during the spring in the Garhwal hills.
A separate painting exhibition was also put up the Raj Bhavan to show different colours of rare flowers of the hill state.
More than 500 children including those physically and mentally challenged and children from poor families also participated in the festival. Jute bags prepared by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) were distributed among these children.
A street play on malnutirition was also presented in the Rajbhavan. Malnutrition is the social theme that has been taken up for the festival this year.
The Governor said the state has the tremendous scope for floriculture as a source of livelihood and the marketing facilities need to be improved to encourage small farmers to take up floriculture.
This time, nearly 1358 varieties of flowers have been depicted in the flower show with tulip, gladiolus, lily and gerbera being the main attraction.
