Bibi Jagir Kaur''s relative booked
Chandigarh, Jan 20 (PTI) A case was registered against Bhupinder Singh, Vice President of Youth Akali Dal and son-in-law of Bibi Jagir Kaur, Akali Dal candidate from Bholath for allegedly bribing and influencing voters.
Kaur and her son-in-law were charged with distributing 183 liquor boxes on January 13 and subsequently a case was registered against them. They have been booked on the directions of the Election Commission of India.
The case relates to announcement of Rs 21,000 as allurement to voters while attending a function in Government Senior Secondary School Bholath on December 31 last year.
Punjab Congress sitting MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira had sent a complaint to EC upon which a report was sought from the Returning Officer, Bholath.
As per the report, the official premises of the government school was misused for political purposes and seeking votes.
The other accused in the case is police constable Gulzar Singh Goldy who had organised the function.
Acting upon the report, the EC has suspended the Headmaster of School and has got the FIR lodged against Bhupinder Singh and Goldy for violating model code of Conduct.
Expressing serious concern over the ongoing protests in Andhra Pradesh, following the nod for the creation of a separate Telangana State, the Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja said that the Centre must address the genuine concerns of the people and assure them that their interests will be duly protected.
