Police Martyrs memorial cricket begins in Kathua
Jammu, Dec 11 (PTI) Police Martyrs Memorial North Zone Inter Club T-20 Cricket championship began in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Additional Director General (ADG) of Police Headquarters, Dr S P Vaid inaugurated the tournament at Sport stadium in Kathua, 70 kms from here.
He was accompanied by DIG Police Farooq Khan, SSP Kathua J L Sharma and Ranjit Kalra, member Finance Committee JKCA.
A rich tribute was paid by them to police martyrs on the occasion and lit the traditional lamp. Dr Vaid while addressing the gathering said that the tournament is in the memory of police martyrs who have scarified their lives while performing their duty.
"It is a tribute for such soul to organise such tournament and to encourage the sports activity in the state," he said.
Later, Dr Vaid opened the tournament by hitting a ball with a bat on the pitch. He was also introduced to the players.
The first match was played between Kathua XI and Udhampur XI. J&K Police and Shaheed Welfare committee Kathia organised the 2nd Police Martyrs Memorial North Zone Inter Club T-20 Cricket Championship 2011-12 under the Civic action programme in the memory of Martyrs of J&K Police who have sacrified their lives while fighting militancy.
A total of 32 teams drawn from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir are participating. The winning team will receive a cash prize of Rs One lakh while the runner-up team will get Rs 51,000. The Man of Series will get a motorcycle.
