India has been ranked 84th in the list of 180 countries in terms of public-sector corruption, which is perceived to be highly corrupt.
While releasing the list of naming and shaming the world's most corrupt countries, the international watchdog has for the first time recommended that tax havens like Switzerland and Liechtenstein should do away with the secrecy in banking laws.
"Corrupt money must not find safe haven. It is time to put an end to secrecy in banking laws," said the Berlin-based group's head Huguette Labelle.
The bottom five nations were Somalia, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sudan and Iraq, while the cleanest countries with ranking close to perfect 10 were New Zealand, Denmark and Singapore.
This year developing countries like Serbia, Burkina Faso, Peru and Ghana fared better than India by claiming 83, 79, 75 and 69 spots respectively.
China scored 3.6 on the scale, thereby indicating slightly better position than India in terms of perception of corrupt countries.
In neighbouring countries, Nepal was at 143rd position much below India, Pakistan scored 2.4 claiming 139th position along with Bangladesh while Sri Lanka scored 3.1 and stood at 97th position.
Nearly half of the countries have scored three or less on the scale of zero (perceived to be most corrupt) to 10 (perceived to be least corrupt) showing that corruption is rampant across the world. The index prepared by the voluntary group used 13 different expert and business surveys.
"Transparency international has found that strong correlation between corruption and poverty continued to exist, jeopardising the global fight against poverty and threatening to derail the UN Millennium Development Goals," Admiral (retd. R H Tahiliani, Chairman of Transparency International India said in a statement.

We can all comment, but does it fall in the ears of the Politicians - a big NO.
Youngsters well educated and genius should be picked by our people no body over the age of 40 and nationally presented as their reps and that all of the government ministers at the central and provincial levels should be asked to quit immediately with orders to vacate their official grand residences in the capital city and the state capitals and the youngsters be ushered in to rule India. It will grow in leaps and bounds and there will not be any end in sight for this growth extending to may be at least 50 centuries! Have the guts vehemently blow out the existing brands of polticians and let them bite the dust. Further charge them with treason in amassing illegal wealth due under the talbe bucks. Then lock them up for ever till they die in cells. A national shame is our leaders leaving a very few who are reasonable.
Tamil Nadu minsters and officials in their newly made pass port offices have been selling pass ports to thousands of Srilankans in India at any where betweewn InRs50000.00 to 5Lacs per pass port! Here they come in as Indians and applied for refugee status. Indian Embassy officials here are taking bribe to deliver the visas the same day ($200.00per pass port). This T Nadu government should be blown out of rule and at least for five years it should have central administration. Cheap **** who would sell themselves and the nation for monies. Dirty all the way.
What will governament do to make things better. What will the common man do to avoid bribes, what will beurocracy do to eradicate corruption, what will political do to avoid scandals.
The best way is let the governament declare independant bodies of home and juditiary under the perview of retired civil services officers with out any role to governament under the juditiary.Let the common man complaint to highest offices if the services are not done and induse penality for late services.let the political leaders induse a legislation that he or she and their family should not have any company or corporate offices nor property exceeding cieling act .He or she should be given house aND PENSION by the govewrnament including free education to children. The memebers trhat govern the home and juditiary should have meritorious service based on the works he or she is involved and with the help of juditiary these can be made. The leaders can only bring his or her complaint to courts. The Number of desks in beurocracy and the number of mp and mla , has to be cut down, the collector will be the secretary for that constituency reporting to MLA directly removing MLC,ZP,and ddaaa ,,doooooo etc all filthy and waste for the excheaqer.Remove the post of presidant and vice presidant. The corporate bribes as party fund shall be eradicated and bring 2 party system with governament sponsering funds the election and its campign works.
Can nay party do in these lines or any leader move on these lines ,the answer is no as the greedy that prevails is unlimited and the common man has to suffer being citizen of india
There is a Kannada proverb which says "Angai hunnige kannadi beke" which means you do not need a mirror to know that you have a wound in your palm.
Corruption is a way of life and extremely rampant in Indian society. Even grand children know that with corruption they can get away with lot of so called problems. There is no honesty, ethics, integrity, accountability left in our society. I am no exception.
