"People and god will not forgive me for neglecting the flood victims and people who stood by me," he said in an interview to Suvarna TV channel.

In Delhi, he read out a long prepared note in which he claimed that the crisis in Karnataka had been resolved. Within hours, the rebel Reddy group told the media that Yeddyurappa is lying and that there has been no compromise.

"Everything has been resolved....I am thankful to the party leadership for reposing faith in me. I will take everyone into confidence," Yeddyurappa said just before he went for a pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu.

"The BJP government in Karnataka will complete its full term," he said.

But soon after, Tourism Minister Janardhana Reddy, the mining baron who is heading the rebel group, told the media that the so-called compromise is just a figment of imagination and that no deal has been ironed out. "We want nothing short of the removal of the Chief Minister," he said.

On Friday, the BJP central leadership had ironed out a compromise formula that would have entailed a cabinet reshuffle and shunting out of some key figures in the Yeddyurappa ministry, including Panchayat Raj minister Shobha Karandlaje. In turn, the Reddys were to drop their demand for the removal of Yeddyurappa.

Even a threat by the BJP central leadership did not yield any results. The BJP leaders reportedly had asked the Reddy brothers and their supporters to resolve the political crisis in 24 hours or face the elections.

According to sources, the BJP top brass , which met to find a compromise formula, categorically rejected the Reddy brothers demand for the head of Chief Minister Yeddyurappa.

The BJP had also toyed with the idea of creating a `super-CM' by forming a committee that will supervise decision making in Karnataka. According to the plan, national BJP leader Arun Jaitley will head the committee comprising Ananth Kumar, Speaker Jagadish Shettar, K S Eshwarappa, Yeddyurappa, Santosh (BJPs organising secretary) and the state BJP president the person who succeeds B Sadananda Gowda. Even this has not satisfied the Reddy brothers.
