The Human Development Report 2009 said the average Mumbaikar is likely to die at least seven years before other Indians and about 12 years before people living in the rest of Maharashtra.
Mumbaikars on an average live to the age of 56.8 years. Life expectancy is 52.6 years for men and 58.1 years for women - against the national average of 63.7 years for both males and females.
Some of the reasons for this decline in lifespan are: Mental stress, lack of physical exercise, lack of hygiene, slums and poor dietary habits.
Most readers who posted their comments agreed that the city had overgrown, there is filth all around and traffic jam and bad transport system are to blame for all the stress.
Said Intensiveks, one of the readers who posted his comments on the report on MSN: Politicians sitting in Mantralaya are usurping all available space in Mumbai by allotting it to the Builders' Lobby. He also blamed unregulated entry of people and unrestricted vehicular expansion in the city for all the evils.

Times Square which was once full of chaotic car traffic is now a public square. The leader behind this transformation is the charismatic and dynamic Janette Sadik-Khan, Commisioner of the New York's Department of Transportation
According to New York's Department of Transport - 356,000 pedestrians walk through Times Square each day. And even though there are 4.5 times as many people as vehicles in Times and Herald Squares - only 11% of the space was allocated for pedestrians. As a result, Broadway at Times Square averages 137% more pedestrian crashes than at other avenues in the area.
WONDER WHEN WE WILL HAVE A CHARISMATIC MUNICIPAL COMMISSIONER FOR BMC MUMBAI AND MMRDA like in NEW YORK TIMES SQUARE WHO CAN MAKE SAKI NAKA AND GHATKOPAR FREE OF ANY VEHICLES. THE CRASS NONSENSE THAT GOES ON HERE IS UNBELIEVABLE. HOW CAN THEY BRING IN ONE MORE MODE OF TRANSPORT-THE MUMBAI METRO- ON AN ALREADY CONGESTED LOCALITY OF SAKI NAKA OR SARKHA NARAK. LIKE YESTERDAY THE TRAFFIC JAMS WERE LASTING FOR MORE THAN 2.5 HOURS BOTH IN MORNING AND EVENING. LEFT HOME AT 9.00 AND REACHED SAKI NAKA AT 12.00 NOON. EVENING LEFT OFFICE AT 5.30 AND GOT DOWN FROM BEST BUS TO WALK ALL THE WAY TO GHATKOPAR DUE TO NON-MOVING TRAFFIC.
A fact realized late, but not too late. The faster one run faster it depreciate. Mumbaikar's fast paced life for no extra reason ahs proved them costly. Both the Govenment and Mumbaikar's are equally responsible.
money pulls money and more money pulls more money and sleu of problems. Every place has saturation point and beyond which further add ons is bound to jeopardize people's interest. The over emphasization and to create a super business hub led to pur more business houses and other commercialize activities. Bjut govt should haave realized much before cogitating the fact that the the too much of concentration of commercial activities will trigger infolw of more and more pouring of people in Mumbai. But the reality blazes the faact that this will sprout the problem like space, basic ammenities. Witout having any alternatives people would certainly like to compromize with the quality of life, but not to leave mumbai, since feeding their stomach is the prioprity. The mass concetration of has turned into aavicious circle as the mumbaikar's prefere to compromize the quality of life, but prefered to saaty in filthy condition and travel for hours together in train. With the actute shortage of space, it has trigered the disintegration of joint family, and thus social life has been jolted. There is no room for relaxation and no pure air to breath. That is led the health hazards of mumbaikars.
Had the govt would have thought of develping other place apart from mumbai with all infrastructure, the commercial activities could have concentrated there as well. The mumbaikar should also realize that it's better to leave in a samller place with a lesser income, but having a better quality of life, instead of dumping themselves in Mumbai at the cost of quality of life and lesser life expectancy.
It's too not late. MUMBAIKARS pls wake up and rush for a better life instead of this material life having short span.
It's also a wake uo cal for all the people who have infactuated with city life and also an emergncy call for govenrment to focus more on other places instead of concentrating too much on cities and metros.
Let's go for a better BHARAT.

STAYING IN MUMBAI one can understand the slogan :"WE LOVE MUMBAI" as one understands "I LOVE MY WIFE".....the problem is when all the NEIGHBOURS start loving YOUR WIFE......
Mumbai is an Island and has limited GROUND SPACE though unlimited "ADJUSTMENT IN THE HEART" is possible.
But when TOO MANY PEOPLE LOVE MUMBAI...err...SHE JUST CAN'T RECIPROCATE OR SATISFY EVERYONE ALL THE TIME....WHEN WILL SHE REST???
