"The prime minister wrote to his family and expressed regret (over the death)," an official at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) told IANS. The official said the prime minister said the death occurred under unfortunate circumstances.
Sumit Prakash Verma, 32, died Tuesday after the vehicle carrying him to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh could not enter the emergency area in time for treatment, his relatives alleged. The prime minister was at the time visiting the hospital for its 30th convocation.
The family of Verma, who was suffering from a major kidney ailment and had breathing trouble, alleged that their vehicle which had come from Ambala, 45 km from Chandigarh, was stopped at different gates of the institute by securitymen, leading to wastage of crucial time. Verma is survived by his wife and two children.
Soon after his death, the PMO asked for a report from PGIMER on the circumstances. The hospital, however, said that no one had been stopped from entering the premises.
On Wednesday, his family demanded that they be given compensation and also a job to a kin as it was the prime minister's security apparatus that delayed his reaching the PGIMER for treatment.

An irrepairable loss to the family. Lots of times we've seen in Delhi, anytime even a small minister makes up his mood to roam around in his luxurious ambassador, it takes a heavy toll on office goers.
Now, this incident really subsided all this. This is a shame on the part of the government and the authorities. A plan should always be there to keep the hospital working in normalcy. The hospital's authority must understand that it's the patients that would make their income .. not the Convocation ceremonies.
I pray for the deceased and his family. May the soul RIP.
Mere apology by the Head of the State will not suffice. After all, precious life is lost at the cost of time and may be,who knows,he could have been saved during those 2 precious hours-the traumatized family should be offered suitable compensation in accordance with the age of the deceased and the commitments he has towards his family and the longevity with which he would have survived if he would have been operated upon!
And hats off to our legal system, this will be beneficial to only the grandchildren of the deceased-who knows-like what happened in Bihar when the cheque given for accident victim bounced and there was no one in the bureaucracy to take the calls of the victims on what to do next!
SHAME ON THE INDIAN SYSTEM!
It is rather
shameful that a precious life has been lost for the sake of VIP security. Do this country which claims to be a democracy "by the people, for the people and for the people" need such VIPs whose pseudo security concerns cost a man his life ? Can a sincere apology by our great PM bring back a precious life or re-compense such a tragedy which has befallen the family? Can some one knock the doors of Supreme Court to seek justice? Do we really need such a Democracy? Do we deserve such a Democracy?Do we need such leaders -- "if at all they can truely be called leaders". Shame Mr PM Shame indeed. You need to resign if you are worth your salt and set an example. Maybe the desolate family can get some consolation. Can you do it Sir !??????No You cannot. So carry on regardless of human lives . People actually have never voted for you! So why concern for human lives. What sort of PM we have and wht good is this democracy for us ? Where are we heading to ? God Guide Us . Pardon Our Honourable PM for He does not know he has sinned.
With all due respect to the deceased and admonition for the authorities, what surprises me still is the immediate demand of the family for compensation and a job.
