When Infosys mentor Narayana Murthy danced in joy

Bangalore: Infosys mentor K. Narayana Murthy is known for his stern image and a professor like looks. But for once, he shed this image and took to the floor for a small jig. Guests clapped in joy and even the bride, Narayana Murty’s daughter Akshata Murthy, was seen amazed at her father’s new `talent.’

The occasion was the mehendi ceremony of Akshata that was hosted by Biocon chairperson and family friend Kiran Mazumdar Shaw on Friday. With this the three-day marriage ceremony formally got `logged in'.

Sources who were present at the ceremony said that Narayana Murthy was so overjoyed that he began clapping and then, when goaded, came on to the centre stage for a little dance. Of course, it was just shaking a leg, but all the more, he added colour to the occasion. The guests cheered him even as his wife Sudha Murthy blushed. She politely refused to join her husband on stage, but was content clapping for him on the sidelines.

The guests included Azim Premji and his wife Jasmine, Desh Deshpande and his wife Jayashree, Sudha Murty's brother Srinivas Kulkarni and his wife; Isher Ahluwalia and Pavan Ahluwalia (wife and son of Montek Singh Ahluwalia) and Sudarshan Maini.

From the Infosys family were Nandan and Rohini Nilekani, Kris and Sudha Gopalakrishnan, Shibulal and Kumari Shibulal and Mohandas Pai and Kusum Pai.

Mehendi ceremony is not part of Karnataka wedding culture. But Kiran Mazumdar Shaw came forward to host it. The ceremony was held in her sprawling Spanish hacienda-style mansion off Hosur Road.

Only close friends and relatives of the Stanford-educated bride, families of the Infosys founders, groom Rishi Sunak's family and guests were invited. There were a few guests from abroad too.

On Saturday it will be a more traditional affair with Akshata and Rishi going through the pre-wedding rituals and a reception at Chamaraju Kalyana Mandir in Jayanagar. The Chamaraju Kalayana Mandir, though small and in a crowded locality, is considered to be a lucky venue. About 600 guests are expected at the event mainly for close relatives, friends and other associates of the Murthys.

On Sunday, Akshata and Rishi will formally tie the knot in a simple, traditional ceremony at 10 am at Hotel Leela Palace.
The day and the timing are considered very auspicious as a rare planetary configuration occurs on that day. This comes once in 12 years.

Later, there will be a reception where all the high and mighty have been invited. Friends of Akshata and Rishi from the US and the UK would be present at all the functions. Rishi works in London. Akshata recently quit as an associate of Siderian Ventures, a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley.

Later, next month, the Murthys will host a reception for their overseas friends and wellwishers in New York .

Akshata's brother Rohan is a Microsoft fellow doing a doctoral programme in computer science at Harvard University. Both of them schooled in Bangalore. She received her undergraduate degree from Claremont McKenna in California and did her MBA from Standford.

Akshata is one of Infosys' largest individual shareholders with 1.4 per cent stake. Her networth is currently around Rs 1,600 crore.
