As per Indian laws, the main opposition party in the house must have at least ten percent seats for the Leader of Opposition post. Congress has only 44 lawmakers in a 543-member house. In an effort to strengthen its claim, the Congress party, has sent a letter to Mahajan claiming that it has more than 60 lawmakers in the house with its pre-poll allies. Mahajan acknowledged that she has received letter from Congress in this regard. Senior Congress leader, Amarinder Singh, had alleged that the Speaker is hand-in glove with the government.
