Six injured in police lathicharge
Kushinagar (UP), Jan 11 (PTI) At least six people reportedly sustained injuries in police lathicharge on agitating farmers at a sugar mill here this afternoon.
Farmers were protesting against the non-payment of arrears and under-weighing.
Farmers of Deoria and Kushinagar led by former state unit president of BJP, Surya Pratap Shahi were moving towards the gates of New India Sugar Mill in Hata area to put locks when mild force was used to disperse them, police said.
The farmers were issued warnings but to no avail after which police had to use force to control them, police said.
Sources said at least six people were injured in police action.
Shahi is also said to have sustained minor injuries, sources added.
Soaring temperatures and heat waves have gripped North India, as locals try to beat it by drinking fluids and covering themselves as they drive their vehicles. The effect of the rising temperatures was visible in Allahabad, where scores of people turned up to take bath in the Ganges river to beat the heat.
