Last accused in Rs.5.25 crore Delhi heist arrested
New Delhi, Jan 5 (IANS) The fifth and last main accused in the city's Rs.5.25 crore heist was arrested Friday afternoon from south Delhi's INA market, police said Saturday.
Yogesh, 36, had been evading arrest after the heist Sep 28, 2012, in south Delhi's Defence Colony. Cash of Rs.12 lakh and a .32 bore pistol used in the crime were recovered from his possession.
Munne Lal, a guard of the van carrying the cash, was shot dead during the robbery.
"Yogesh, who belongs to Sudamapuri in east Delhi's New Usmanpur, was arrested three months after the Defence Colony heist," said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police.
The other accused -- Vijay Nahar Singh, Hari Kishan, Deepak, Ranjit Rumal -- were arrested earlier and are lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail.
The accused had waylaid a bank van of Premier Sheild Pvt. Ltd. Company while it was en route from ICICI Bank's Hauz Khas branch to Lajpat Nagar.
With the arrest of all the accused, police have recovered Rs.4.15 crore.
"Yogesh had stabbed a classmate when he was in Class 8 and was arrested. He has been involved in 13 cases including murder, robbery, dacoity and snatching. He was convicted in three cases of robbery and drug peddling and spent eight years in jail," police said.
"At the time of his arrest, Yogesh was dressed like a 'sadhu' and had grown a beard to elude police," Sharma said. She added that Yogesh stayed in temples, mosques and gurdwaras and spent travelled a lot in trains.
He had not contacted any of his friends after the committing the crime, Sharma said.
