Meghalaya CM urges regional parties to support Mukherjee



Shillong, Jul 5 (PTI) With two of his coalition partners supporting P A Sangma in the Presidential election, Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today said he was pursuing with regional parties in the state to support UPA''s Pranab Mukherjee.

"I have spoken to the president of UDP yesterday on this issue and in the past I had written a letter seeking their support to the UPA candidate. I have also requested them to send a delegation to Guwahati," he told reporters here.

Mukul Sangma, who also urged HSPDP to come in support of P A Sangma, will attend a meeting at Guwahati tomorrow on the issue.

The UDP and the HSPDP already pledged their support to P A Sangma in view of his stand for the cause of the ''tribals'' and the minority Christians.

Besides the regional parties, the state unit of the NCP also openly campaigned for P A Sangma, a Garo tribal and a politician from the northeast.

The Arunachal Congress, AGP (Assam) and the MNF (Manipur) from the region have so far come out in support of Sangma. PTI JOP SUS ZMN
