Regularisation of illegal colonies to be expedited: Delhi govt

New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI) Bolstered by the Centre relaxing norms for regularisation of over 1,200 unauthorised colonies, the Delhi government today said it will now step up efforts to regularise the settlements as soon as possible.

Accepting a request of the Delhi government, the Urban Development Ministry has allowed regularisation of the colonies by drawing their boundaries on the basis of satellite images of 2007 which is likely to expedite the regularisation process.

"We are very happy with the Centre''s decision. Now we will expedite the entire process of regularisation of the colonies," a top official said.

Last month, the city government had asked Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath to allow finalising the boundaries of unauthorised colonies on the basis of the aerial map of 2007 instead of the one taken in 2002 so as to provide relief to a large number of unauthorised colonies.

"The Survey of India has been told to finalise the boundaries of the colonies on the basis of satellite image of 2007," the official said.

Delhi Development Authority, which functions under administrative control of UD Ministry, issued a notification on Wednesday authorising the city government to finalise the boundaries of the colonies having more than 50 per cent built up area as per aerial image of 2007.

The entire regularisation process had slowed down as the government faced lot of difficulties in finalising the boundaries on the basis of 2002 images.

Lack of developmental work in unauthorised colonies -- home to around 40 lakh people and which were traditional Congress stronghold -- was identified as a major reason for the party''s defeat in the Delhi municipal polls last month.

Following the municipal election results, Dikshit had put the regularisation of unauthorised colonies on fast track, asking all departments and agencies concerned to speed up development works in the settlements. (More) PTI MPB
