This panoramic photo shows the Sendai Airport terminal on March 17th.
The busiest airport in Tohoku (Northeast), located just about a kilometer (5/8 mile) from the Pacific Ocean was severely struck by the tsunami on 11th, with about 1,600 people stranded inside the terminal for more than two days.
Although the runway was urgently repaired and is now available for landing of airplanes and helicopters carrying humanitarian assistance, it is unclear when the airport can resume its role as a major commercial airport, if at all. (Sankei Shimbun)
