Washington, Apr 12 (PTI) Renu Khator, the highest ranking Indian American in the education sector and the Chancellor of University of Houston, met President Barack Obama and discussed on making the higher education affordable in the US.

"I had an opportunity to discuss President''s higher education agenda, particularly his Blueprint on college affordability. Student debt is at USD one trillion and college is getting beyond the reach of many students," Khator told PTI on her meeting with Obama.

Khator, the only Indian American woman to heads a large university in the US, told Obama when he recently visited this Southern City that the University of Houston ranks number 12 in the nation for graduating students with the least amount of debt at the time of graduation.

"And we are not raising tuition this year," she said.

"I also gave an update on the University of Houston, particularly our Energy Research Park, and made a case for the University to play an important role in his Manufacturing Innovation Network," she said.

"President said he was impressed with what he heard and appreciated our attention to student access and success," Khator said.

Born in Farrukhabad, Khator is the first foreign-born Chancellor of University of Houston and the second woman to hold this position.

She is the first Indian American to lead a major research university in the US and the second Indian American to lead an accredited university in the US.
