Senior lawyer gunned down in Lahore
Lahore, Jan 9 (PTI) A senior lawyer was gunned down by unidentified men outside his residence here today, triggering protests by the legal fraternity across the city.
Police officials said they were yet to ascertain the motive for the murder of Nasrullah Warraich.
Bar associations called for a protest against the killing tomorrow.
Superintendent of Police (Operations) Abdul Ghaffar Qaisarani said that soon after Warraich returned home this evening, he was informed by his servant that some men had come to see him.
"The servant told him that one of the visitors, who identified himself as Shahid from Sahiwal, had said that he wanted to get some papers signed by the lawyer. When Warraich stepped outside, one of the men opened fire at him. The group then fled," Qaisarani said.
Warraich was taken to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where he was declared dead.
A large number of lawyers gathered at the hospital.
Warriach was a friend of Punjab Governor Latif Khosa, himself a noted lawyer.
Qaisarani said investigators were trying to establish the motive for the killing and to trace the killers.
Warraich, a father of two, was a member of the executive committee of the Pakistan Bar Council.
The Pakistan Bar Council, Supreme Court Bar Association, Punjab Bar Council and Lahore Bar Association have backed the call for a strike tomorrow.
Soaring temperatures and heat waves have gripped North India, as locals try to beat it by drinking fluids and covering themselves as they drive their vehicles.
