Experts discuss agenda for Rio plus 20 climate conference

Kathmandu, Sep
7 (PTI) International community should address the concerns of the poor living in the mountain region who have become victims of the impact of climate change, experts said as they gathered here to set agenda for the upcoming Rio plus 20 conference.

People living in the mountain region and low land areas are poor and isolated and their concerns need to be addressed properly, said Andreas Shield, Director General of International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

The Himalayas are the major source of fresh water in the world and the fresh water scarcity has become a key concern for the global community, he said at a press meet organised to brief about the three-day summit on climate change.

Shield said there is need for taking urgent action to tackle the issue.

Climate change has emerged as a new concept after the Rio Conference of 1992 and it has adversely affected productivity, biodiversity and also contributed in increased environmental pollution, said Madhav Karki, Deputy Director General of ICIMOD.

Nepal''s President Ram Baran Yadav yesterday inaugurated the "International Conference on Green Economy and Sustainable Mountain Development", which aims to set agenda for the Rio plus 20 conference scheduled to take place in Reo de Janerio, Brazil in June next year.

The global community has the responsibility to adopt green economy by lowering carbon emission and at the same time increasing productivity and benefiting the poor people, said experts participating in the conference.

As the mountain region people have no contribution towards carbon emission but are suffering from the adverse effects of climate change, there is a need to develop a mechanism so that the people of the Himalayan region are properly compensated, the experts suggested.

The conference is being attended by more than 100 representatives which includes environmental scientists, climate change experts, government officials, resource persons from various countries including India, Pakistan, China, Bhutan, US and Canada.
