Washington, Aug 2 (PTI) US President Barack Obama has applauded a Hindu American group for advancing public service, interfaith collaboration and pluralism, as the organisation made its White House debut by holding a community briefing there.
"Guided by a commitment to lifting up the lives of others, organisations like Hindu American Seva Charities (HASC) demonstrate the compassion of the American people and reflect our capacity to unite and address the challenges facing our world," Obama said in a message to the 2nd annual conference of the HASC.
Titled ''Impacting Change in America and Abroad,'' the three-day event, which began on July 29, was co-sponsored by the White House Office of Faith Based and Neighbourhood Partnerships.
The first day of the event was held inside the White House. Nearly 200 Hindu Americans, youth and community leaders of many faith, gathered at the White House briefing, which was closed to the media.
"I send greetings to all those attending ''Dharmic Seva'': Catalyst to Strengthening and Building Pluralistic Communities. Our Nation has always been a land of opportunity and optimism," Obama said.
"As Americans, we take responsibility for ourselves and for each other; for the ideals we embrace and for the future we share. We celebrate selflessness and value those across our country who step forward and make important contributions to the well-being of humanity," said the US President.
Obama''s Pastor-in-Chief, Joshua DuBois, Executive Director, Office of Faith Based and Neighbourhood Partnerships at the White House, termed the event as historic.
"This, Hindu American gathering, is historic. We hope to bring more understanding of the government support of civic engagement," he said. (More) PTI LKJ
