Islamabad, June 18 (PTI) Pro-Taliban militants attacked a security post in South Waziristan tribal region of northwest Pakistan today, killing a soldier and injuring three more, officials said.
The militants fired rockets at the check post in Ladha area.
Several militants were also killed when the troops retaliated, the officials said.
Pakistani forces used artillery to shell suspected militant positions, officials said.
The injured soldiers were airlifted by a helicopter to a military hospital in the region.
The check post was damaged in the assault, the third attack on security forces in the area this month.
Three soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb attack in the same area on June 13.
On June 9, scores of militants attacked a security post in Makeen area of South Waziristan and killed at least eight soldiers.
In October 2009, thousands of soldiers launched a major ground and air operation against militants in South Waziristan, the birthplace of the Pakistani Taliban.
The Pakistan Army declared victory in early 2010 but the recent attacks have raised concern about the continued presence of militants in the area.
The attacks have come at a time when the government has started repatriating thousands of tribesmen displaced as the result of the fighting in South Waziristan.
Several hundreds of families have returned but the repatriation to Ladha and Makeen areas has not yet been started due to security reasons. .
