In a veiled critique of China, Manmohan Singh said although India's economic performance may not match that of China's, but it would still prefer the Indian democracy rather than the Chinese non-democratic path.
"There is no doubt that the Chinese growth performance is superior to the Indian performance," he said in response to another question on why the Indian economic performance was lagging behind that of China's.
"But I have always believed there are other values which are more important than the growth of gross domestic product like respect for fundamental human freedoms, respect for rule of law, respect for multi-religious, multi-ethnic rights," he said.
"Certainly, I would like to choose the Chinese path. I would like to stick to the Indian path," he stressed.

MANMOHAN IS RIGHT, WHATEVER MAY BE THE CHINEESE GROWTH NO DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION IS THERE. WORLD CAN'T FORGET BRUTUAL MURDER OF 10000 OF CHINEESE IN TIANENMEN SQUARE. PLIGHT OF MUSILIMS IN TURKIMANISTHAAN ( SINGINAG). PLIGHT OF TIBETANS. A GROUPE OF PEOPLE IN THE NAME OF COMMUNINSM LOOTING PEOPLE THAT IS CHINA. HERE I CAN SAY ANYTHING AGAINST MANMOHAN IF A CHINEESE TALK SOMETHING AGAINST HUJINTAO. HE WILL BE IN JAIL. WHAT IS IT WHAT SORT OF RULE IS IT. BULL ****. SOVIET COMMUNISM WAS FAR BETTER THAN THE SO CALLED CHINEESE CAPITLISTIC COMMUNISM. CHINA IS A TOTALITERIAN **** COUNTRY. NO FREEDOM.
Our PM is fully right when he says that India doesn't want to follow China like growth.
He is a man of great vision and thinking. In China people do not enjoy basic human rights. Though it's great that China has grown at a rate of 10% but economic growth without basic human rights and social freedom is useless. In China people do not even have right to protest against the communist goverment. They are met with full force if they go against their govt. policies. On the other hand people in India have the full right to protest against anything. Do you think Manu sharma would have gone back to jail again after he was let out on parole in a country like China. The answer is no.
Such things can only happen in a fair and democratic set up. You never know that how many Manu sharma's are there in China too and they are let off because there the people and media doesn't enjoy freedom to express their views.
No doubt that in India corruption has taken a dangerous form. People have started accepting it as a way of life, which is highly shameful. But at the same time we also know that it exists in large proportions because of freedom of thought and free media. We can protest against it and take matter to the court also. In China such issues are swept under the carpet to present a good image of the country and to show great growth. It doesn't matter to them that they are suffocating their own people by snatching their rights. India has RTI act to empower people to know about the govt working. Does it exist in China? In the end only democracy wins. Yes India has it's share of problems but we will surely overcome them with passage of time.
This is truly a vision, current realities are tough and we know that millions are working to resolve them. I am proud of MMS. China is a Super Giant with their unique formula and philosophy. India is different, we can openly see the reality while in China it is under wraps. In the Indian democracy it is of the people, by the people and for the people and there is FREEDOM ( with 1.1+ billion there are huge challenges). China is very focused, One child per family, strict laws and growth is at a fantastic pace. Both countries are poles apart and cannot be compared using the same tools. The choices they make in the future will have global ramifications esp. in terms of foreign policy and global trade wars.
One of the above comments made quote "Who wants this nonsense "9% GROWTH"?? It is better to have a "GROWTH OF THE BEARD of 9%" instead.." unquote is unbecoming esp. as MMS is the Prime Minister of India. He is perhaps the most educated, well qualified Prime Ministers in the world.
what rule of law is he talking about. One Manu Sharma in the capital of the country, with help from the people in power getting parole when undertrails are rotting and serving years in jails, without being proven guilty.
