From Paul Ohia
Abuja, Jan 24 (PTI) Nine people were killed by suspected members of Islamic fundamentalist sect Boko Haram who attacked a residential area in Maiduguri town in Nigeria''s northern state of Borno beheading five persons including a father and his son.
In a similar attack, three persons were shot dead in another area of the city considered as the headquarters of the Islamic insurgents.
One of the persons beheaded, last night, by the attackers was identified as a director in the Borno state ministry of animals and fisheries.
Witnesses said the military went in pursuit and shelled the house where they ran into leading to the death of some unspecified number of persons including the militants.
The incidents were confirmed by a military spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa who said only three persons were killed in the entire city yesterday.
Though no group has claimed responsibility, the only terrorist group that has been carrying out such attacks in the country is Boko Haram.
The group wants an Islamic state in Nigeria''s mostly Muslim north.
More than 1000 people have been killed in the north and capital city of Abuja since the sect started bombing and shooting at people in public places since 2009.
Expressing serious concern over the ongoing protests in Andhra Pradesh, following the nod for the creation of a separate Telangana State, the Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja said that the Centre must address the genuine concerns of the people and assure them that their interests will be duly protected.
