Comprehensive immigration reform good for US economy: WH

Washington, Jan 22 (PTI) A comprehensive immigration reform is a good thing for the United States as this will not only unite the country but also benefit its economy, White House said today, a day after President Barack Obama in his inaugural address vowed for it during his second term.
"The president has spoken to this in the last several weeks, and he made clear his intention to act on this very important issue early in his second term. He will keep that commitment. You can expect that he will move forward with that," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said responding to a question on the remarks made by Obama during his inaugural speech.
"Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity; until bright young students and engineers are enlisted in our workforce rather than expelled from our country," Obama had said.
Responding to questions, Carney said comprehensive immigration reform, like so many of the issues that Obama talked about yesterday, is something that leaders can unite and act on.
"It has been an issue in the past that has enjoyed bipartisan support from very prominent Republicans, as well as Democrats. It''s the right thing to do; it''s the right thing to do for our economy.
"As the president said, we shouldn''t be giving, you know, foreign students degrees in computer science and engineering and then expelling them from the country if they want to stay here and build businesses and help our economy grow," Carney said.
"So this is something that he hopes and believes will enjoy bipartisan support when he addresses it, and he will address it early in his second term," he said.
