Gunmen kill 18 in Nigeria

Abuja, Jan 22 (PTI) At least 18 people were killed today when unidentified gunmen opened fire at traders in Damboa town in Nigeria''s northern state of Borno.
"They (gunmen) shot at hunters who sell bushmeats," a local government official said.
Damboa town is the capital of Damboa local government area near the city of Maiduguri where radical militant group Boko Haram has its base.
The last of such an attack on Damboa was in November when suspected Boko Haram militants killed four persons including a fire service officer.
They had burnt down the local government secretariat complex and bombed three public schools.
Boko Haram is the major terrorist group in Nigeria which has killed thousands through suicide attacks, bombings and shootings.
The group says it wants to install an Islamic caliphate in Nigeria, an oil-rich African country with a population of 150 million people equally shared between the two major religions-Islam and Christianity.
Following a dreadful washout in the four-State Assembly polls, a humbled Congress accepted its defeat and called for a much needed introspection to rethink their strategy ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
