18 children among 27 dead in US school shooting

New York, Dec 14 (PTI) At least 18 children were among 27 people killed when a young man opened fire inside a US school today, in yet another tragic shooting that ended with the death of the gunman and left the country shocked and horrified.
The incident occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown city of Connecticut state.
Connecticut police said "several fatalities" have been reported in the incident though the shooter was now dead.
Wearing all black and carrying two 9mm handguns, the gunman opened fire in the school this morning, sending panic waves around the city.
The incident sent crying children spilling into the school parking lot as frightened parents waited for a word on their kids.
Connecticut State Police lieutenant Paul Vance told reporters outside the school that the "shooter was deceased inside the building."
He said the shooting resulted in "several fatalities including students and staff."
The police has recovered a 9mm handgun from the scene.
Officials said the shooter wore black combat dear and a military vest.
There was also some confusion initially about the number of shooters as some reports suggested two men were likely involved in the shooting episode.
Fox News quoted a law enforcement official as saying that the 20-year-old shooter is believed to be a father of one of the students at the school.
"I was in the gym and I heard a loud, like seven loud booms, and the gym teachers told us to go in the corner, so we all huddled," one student told NBC Connecticut during its live broadcast. "And I kept hearing these booming noises. And we all... started crying". .
Expressing serious concern over the ongoing protests in Andhra Pradesh, following the nod for the creation of a separate Telangana State, the Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja said that the Centre must address the genuine concerns of the people and assure them that their interests will be duly protected.
