CPC congress begins closing session, new central committee to

Beijing, Nov 14 (PTI) China''s ruling Communist Party today began a key meeting to elect a new Central Committee which would choose a new generation of Chinese leadership for the next decade.
A total of 2,307 delegates and specially invited delegates are attending the 18TH National Congress of the CPC being held at the Great Hall of the People here.
During the session, a new Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the party which will go into indiscipline and corruption cases, will be elected.
Delegates to the congress are also expected to pass resolutions on the report of the 17th CPC Central Committee, the work report of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and an amendment to the CPC Constitution, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Top Chinese leaders, including Chinese President and CPC General Secretary Hu Jintao, Jiang Zemin, Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang were present at the closing session. The meeting was presided over by Hu.
The congress, which opened on November 8, will choose the CPC''s 25-member Politburo as well as the nine or seven-member Politburo Standing Committee.
Hu Jintao, 69 is expected to step down as CPC General Secretary after a 10-year stint. 59-year-old Xi Jinping, currently, Chinese Vice President, is expected to be selected as the new General Secretary of the CPC tomorrow. Li Keqiang, 59, is tipped to become the new Chinese Premier in place of Wen, who also completed 10 years in the post.
