The Australian Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism recognise the work of photographers across a range of genres. This week the winners for community/regional photography award and the newly created Nikon-Walkley Press Photo of the Year were announced as well as three finalists in the categories of news, sport, photographic essay and press photographer of the year; the winners will be announced on November 28.

Barat Ali Batoor’s winning photograph ‘First day at sea’ was entered as part of his 'Hazara Exodus' photographic essay series. Here with 93 passengers hidden below deck so as not to be seen by the water police, they take it in turns to come up for fresh air on the first day at sea.
