Nineteen terrorists associated with terror group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks in the US. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, while the third hit the Pentagon. The fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. More than 3,000 people were killed in the attacks. Often referred to as 9/11, the attacks triggered major US efforts to fight terrorism.
