A deadly explosion at a fertiliser plant has left the town of West, Texas looking "like a war zone", the local sheriff said.

At least three people are confirmed dead and hundreds have been injured in the fiery explosion at a fertiliser plant near Waco..

The explosion was reported at about 8pm Wednesday (1pm Thursday NZT) in West, a town of some 2,700 people about 129 km south of Dallas and 32 km north of Waco.

"It's a lot of devastation. I've never seen anything like this," McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara told Reuters.

"It looks like a war zone with all the debris."
