April 3 marks the 98th birth anniversary of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, fondly known as Sam Bahadur and the architect of the victorious 1971 Indo-Pakistan war that led to the liberation of Bangladesh.

Manekshaw was undeniably one of India's most celebrated heroes and respected officers, and one of only two Indian military officers to hold the highest rank of Field Marshal in the Indian Army.

Remembering him today on his birthday, we look at the conflict that marked the peak of his military career - the 1971 war which saw him mastermindthe rout of the Pakistan Army in one of the easiest and quickest surrenders in recent military history.
