MSN Profile: A four star general, and master puppeteer
As relations between Pakistan's politics and military come to a head, raising fears of a coup, we focus on the one man behind the show, the proverbial wizard behind the curtain, the one man who seems to stand tall over all others in the final say -- Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.
A four star general in the Pakistan Army, Kayani succeeded the outgoing General Pervez Musharraf as the Chief of Army Staff and the commander of the Pakistani army on November 29, 2007.
He has worked his way up the ranks to emerge as the man who calls the shots in Pakistan. In a momentous move on July 24, 2010, Prime Minister Gillani extended Kayani's term as Chief of the Army Staff by three years. Not surprisingly, in 2008, Newsweek named Kayani the 20th most powerful person in the world.
Take a look at how General Ashfaq Kayani rose from the former Director General of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and Director General of Military Operations (MO) to the Chief of the Army Staff of Pakistan to what many believe as the man who, really, runs Pakistan.
