At least four people have been killed and hundreds more injured as the protests that have engulfed the Ukraine capital of Kiev turned increasingly violent this week.

Local media has reported that four protesters were shot dead as conflict between riot police and pro-European integration protesters has heightened and clashes continue between Hrushevskoho Street and Independence Square (Maidan).

The situation looked to have improved on Thursday, January 23, when protesters agreed a truce of several hours with police, as opposition leaders agreed to meet President Viktor Yanukovych for more reconcilliary talks.
