Some of the most important political figures on earth were struck down in their prime, and their untimely deaths well and truly changed the course of modern history. Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, whose assassination took place more than 20 years ago, is one of the most notable of these, but there have been other key figures whose lives were ended tragically early
Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May 1991 in a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur near Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
Gandhi was campaigning for the upcoming elections when the assassin known as Dhanu greeted him. She detonated the explosive when she bent down to touch his feet. He was killed immediately along with 14 others. His body was severely mutilated and strewn to bits.
The attack was blamed on the LTTE as India had sent its Peace Keeping Force to Sri Lanka. The assassination attempt on him was possibly to prevent Gandhi from coming back to power.
The assassination trial was held under the TADA Act. Presently, three convicts – Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan – are on death row. While the Tamil Nadu government ordered the release of these three convicts and four others, the country’s top court stayed the decision till 6 March 2014.
