At least one protester died in Sao Paulo state when a car rammed into a crowd of demonstrators after the driver apparently became angry about being unable to drive along a street, according to reports.

The protests were sparked by anger over the cost of hosting major sporting events in the country.

The football Confederations Cup is currently being played in Brazil and been affected by the unrest that started more than a week ago. Brazil hosts the football World Cup next year and the 2016 Olympics.

But the unrest has mushroomed into wider demonstrations over a range of complaints from high taxes to corruption and rising prices.

President Dilma Rousseff called an emergency meeting of her top cabinet members, having only made one statement since the demonstrations began, saying peaceful protests were part of the democratic process.
