News feature: Women who faced the fire

Ugandan woman Elen Lanyomo, whose lips were cut off by Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), eats a banana in Juba, southern Sudan September 26, 2006. Lanyomo, 43, is part of the Ugandan delegation negotiating a peaceful end to a vicious 20-year insurgency that has killed thousands and displaced nearly 2 million people. The LRA has gained notoriety for their brutal attacks against civilians -- beating villagers to death, slicing lips and ears off survivors and abducting thousands of children to serve as fighters and sex slaves.
