Shootout at US army base
This undated photo obtained from www.cstsonline.org shows Major Malik Nidal Hasan, the alleged gunman killed after opening fire at the Fort Hood military base in Texas on Thursday. At least 12 people were killed, including Malik, and 31 people were injured in the attack. Two other soldiers have been arrested in connection with the shooting. US media identified him as an Army pyschiatrist.
On Thursday afternoon, around 1:30 am Friday India time, a gunman identified as Major Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire indiscriminately in the Soldier Readiness Centre at Fort Hood, described as home to America's armoured corps. The major was eventually overpowered but not before he shot dead 10 soldiers and one police officer. He is wounded and in custody. The FBI has been asked to check Major Hasan's records. An FBI team is already at the base. Reports say he was not happy about the prospect of being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.
Fort Hood is located near Killeen, Texas. At least 25,000 soldiers are at Fort Hood at any point, a Pentagon spokesman said. Hasan, a 39-yr-old, was a psychiatrist who previously worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. However, later, he was practising at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood
