Punjab protests 1984 anti-Sikh riots, shuts down
The Punjab bandh call given by the hardliners in memory of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots passed of peacefully in the city barring one incident at Mata Rani Chowk, where a local leader of Vishav Hindu Parishad (VHP) had to seek police cover when he was confronted by some hardliners. About 2,000 people were killed in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots after the murder of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards.

To cal 1984 tragedy as a "RIOT" is wrrong as the rriot takes place between two communities or class. In 1984 it was definitely not "RIOT" as no community as a community attacked sikh brothers as sikhs living across the country are having most cordial relations with everybody in ther respective neighbourhood. Patriotism, nationalism, sacrifices of sikhs are recorded not only in history but also in the hearts of all Indians. I saw myself in Kanpur what actually happened. It was a total failure of Govt. machinery at that time and the govt. rather encouraged "jhuggiwalas" and other poor footpath dwellers to loot and harm sikh brothers who are financially better off. No govt. agency came to their rescue. Hindu brothers came out all the way to help
and save sikh brothers which was their national duty but the govt. gave the name "RIOT": to this episode which was not a riot at all. Govt.encouraged punishment to the whole community for the crime two soldiers had committed.
