Southern cinema made a clean sweep at the 55th National Awards. While Prakash Raj won the award for the Best Actor for his work in Kanjeevaram, Uma Shree bagged the Best Actress award for Girish Kasaravalli's Kannada film Gulabi Talkies. Veteran director Adoor Gopalakrishnan bagged the Best Director award for his Malayalam film Naalu Pennungal, while Priyadarshan's Kanjeevaram won the Best Film award. The awards were announced in September and were presented in the Rashtrapati Bhavan on October 21.
