Girl's body had bruises, head was banged to a wall

Mumbai: A five-year-old girl was found dead on the staircase of a seven-storied building in Kurla, on Tuesday morning. The body was found in a gunny bag and the police, who registered a case of murder, said that medical reports have confirmed she had been raped.

The parents of the victim lodged a complaint with the police on Monday night after the child didn't return home. Her father, a labourer at a shoe-making unit, was informed by his wife on returning home that the child had been missing after she went out to play at 8.30 pm.

"On Tuesday morning, residents of the building found a gunny bag on the stairway leading to the terrace. On opening the bag, they found the girl's body and informed the police. We suspect that she was strangulated and her head was banged on the wall leading to her death," said Dilip Sawant, deputy commissioner of police.

Police officials said that the child's body had several wounds and her mouth was gagged. Her undergarments were also missing.

When contacted, the girl's father alleged that they were sure the accused was someone known to them. "My daughter would have never gone with any stranger," he said.

Locals said that this is the third incident in their locality in the last one year. "A year ago, a 7-year-old had gone missing from their area and was never found. Six months ago too, a six-year-old was found raped and murdered," said Ahmed Hussain (45), a resident of the Vatsala Naik chawl.

In another incident, Govandi police arrested a 24-year-old watchman of a dumping ground on Monday for allegedly raping a minor in the neighbourhood.
