London: Seven months after the launch of Nano, Tata Motors is toying with the idea of letting local garage assemblers put together the world's cheapest car and also sell it under a brand of their own.
The company, which is revisiting the concept of distributed manufacturing mooted by Chairman Ratan Tata when he first talked of the Rs 1 lakh car several years ago, will become the world's first to attempt such a "federal" structure of manufacturing.
Kant moots Micro-assembly sites
Speaking at The Economist Innovation conference in London on Friday, Tata Motors Vice-Chairman and former managing director Ravi Kant said with the new Nano plant likely to start commercial production in the last quarter of this financial year ending March 2010, the company may allow enterprising assemblers to set up micro-assembly sites across the country, with each producing some 10,000 cars a year.
"We call it Nano, they (assemblers) don't have to," said Kant, who received the The Economist Innovation award 2009 (for business process) on behalf of Tata for developing and rolling out the world's cheapest car.

I don;t think it's a bad idea to think about micro assemblers, but it's also essential to know if the car manufacture takes the responsibility of the quality control and the function check.
And one point to add..... the image of a brand starts diminishing if any local assemblers start making the car.
Market Automotive segment is very sensitive to brand image and the prolong durability of the vehicle. So a very substantial effort would be required to have a very fine checklist with the micro assemblers.
Today people are not worried about the place where "Nano" is assembled as they know it's from the TATA car plant. But if micro assembler concept is used people would be start becoming more choosy in buying the vechile (specially if one assembler is better than another).
So the same vehicle builds up differnt image in peoples view.
Why Tata motors not inviting the customer to buy the parts to assamble their own or they can ask customer to procure parts from their ancillaries to assamble to ride.Is it not good idea ?
Can anybody remember the rat killer story ? A man buy a rat killer medicine, after opening the packet he found a pc.of paper where it was written " Catch and kill"
Instead of Nano car,Tata Motors will sale a gift pack of 100,000.00 and if you open you will find a paper written "Buy parts and assamble to ride"
ITS JUST A IDEA TO ASSEMBLE NANO IN GARAGES. THEY ARE NOT SAYING THAT THEY ARE DOING SO. IT ALSO MAY BE THE PRESSURE OF LESS SUPPLY . AND THERE ARE AUTHORITIES TO CHECK IT. THEY ALWAYS FOLLOW WORLD LELVEL STANDARDS. AND I BELIEVE TATA. BUT REALLY NANO IS A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT BY A EVER GREAT INDIAN COMPANY TATA.............. GOOD GOING TATA
It is one of the greatest aceivement of TATA's in bringing this wonderful car.People may comment. It is the alternative to the two wheelers who risk their life in heavy highway trafic. When one travel in congested city trafic no one fell the danger but once you enter the broad six lanes one will feel the risk. The picture above is good example.
Only strict quality control from TATA will do.and there is market for this car.All the Best.
in fact nano shl be called
either of these three
1.JUGAD
2. THAKELA
3. MOTOR JHUGGI
